The 1500HD and SS are two incomparable Silverado models
designed for rugged use. The HD is a heavy-duty model with
an extra hard-working set of abilities, while the SS is
a new model that pushes high-performance to the next level.
The SS stands for 'Super Sport,' and as one would expect
from Chevrolet, the Silverado SS comes off the production
line as an extremely confident pickup with adventure on
its mind. Pushing the Silverado's power up a few notches,
these two specialized models excel in their given areas
of expertise.
Available Models
The 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500HD comes in 2WD and 4WD configurations.
The SS is offered in only one model, with all-wheel drive
part of its standard sport package. The 1500HD uses a crew
cab configuration, with four full doors, while the SS has
an extended cab's two rear-hinged back doors.
Interior Features
With a rear bench seat, both the 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500HD
and SS can seat up to six passengers. The 1500HD is built
for hours and hours of work, and with this in mind manufacturers
have laid out a comfortable interior in which to pass the
time. Air conditioning with dual-zone manual climate control,
power steering, vinyl upholstery, AM/FM radio, engine-hour
meter, trip computer and a cargo-box light are all part
of the standard package.
The new SS is no ordinary Silverado. While this is especially
so with regard to its ability, it also holds true in terms
of its appearance. Its custom interior is a Dark Charcoal
color and is equipped with leather bucket seats with special
"SS" embroidered headrests. As usual, both the
1500HD and SS offer a nice list of optional enhancements
for the ride.
Exterior Features
Both models have a 6.5-ft cargo bed. The SS is truly a distinguished
pickup with an aggressive stance, monochromatic color scheme
and specially styled aluminum wheels. The Silverado SS is
offered in Black, Arrival Blue Metallic and Victory Red.
Performance
These two models certainly know how to perform. The 2003
Chevy Silverado 1500HD is equipped with a 6.0-liter V8 engine
that is perfect for the job. With 300 horsepower at 4400
rpm and 360 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm, it has plenty of
muscle.
Like a rambunctious puppy, the SS always wants to go out
and play. It is given an LQ9 version of the 6.0-liter V8
found on the 1500HD, providing an impressive 345 horsepower
at 4400 rpm and 380 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. A standard
full-time, all-wheel-drive (AWD) viscous-coupled transfer
case provides exceptional on-road, wet or dry pavement handling,
while an improved high-performance chassis package translates
into great cornering ability.
Safety and Security
The 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500HD and SS are both given standard
antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, dual front airbags and daytime
running lights. The Quadrasteer four-wheel steering system
is another feature available on 1500HD models that improves
handling to avoid potentially dangerous situations.
