The Pontiac Grand Prix is one model that can truly boast
a respectable heritage. Originally introduced back in 1962,
the Grand Prix has been delivering a solid driving package
to consumers for more than 40 years. The goal, which continues
to this day, has always been the same: to deliver style,
performance and passion to mid-size car enthusiasts.
The 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP model is available with
a high-performance Competition Group Package (Comp G). It
makes the Grand Prix capable of attaining .83G of lateral
acceleration in turns.
In addition, the Comp G package includes the StabiliTrak
system and TAPshift (Touch Activated Power). The latter
is an innovative feature that combines a manual transmission
with the convenience of an automatic. TAPshift uses Formula
One-style paddles on each side of the steering wheel to
manually control which gear the driver chooses.
Available Models
The 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix is offered in three models:
GT1, GT2 and GTP.
Interior Features
The four-door Pontiac Grand Prix sedan is roomy enough to
accommodate up to five passengers without cramming them
together. It also provides up to 57 cubic feet of cargo
space.
Regardless of trim level, all Grand Prixs are well equipped.
Some of the features included are climate controls with
manual settings and heating and cooling outlets for the
rear seat. Other standard features are two power outlets,
rear reading lamps, electronic cruise control, power programmable
door locks, a driver information center and an AM/FM stereo
with CD player.
There are several options groups available in addition
to the Comp G package. Stand-alone items include satellite
radio, the OnStar system and a power sunroof.
Exterior Features
The 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix's design is all about convenience.
The rear doors swing open 82 degrees, making it easier to
enter and exit the rear seat and to load bulky items. Along
this line, the trunk is now nearly 10 inches wider and the
lift-over height almost 6 inches lower.
Performance
GT1 and GT2 models use a 3.8-liter V6 engine. It gives the
front-wheel drive Pontiac Grand Prix 200 horsepower at 5200
rpm and 230 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. 4-speed automatic
transmission is standard on all models.
GTP models use a supercharged version of the same V6 engine.
The result is an impressive 260 horsepower at 5200 rpm and
280 lb-ft of torque at 3600 rpm.
Safety and Security
All models have dual front airbags, daytime running lights
and fog lights. GT2 and GTP models add antilock 4-wheel
disc brakes, traction control and a tire-pressure monitor.
